Now I am really confused with this T2

Over the last several days my BG at wake up has been in the low 90's on average. Then right after breakfast it has shot up to the 180's two hours afterwards. It will then come down to the low 100's. The rest of the day it's fine, between 80-70. This morning I wake up at 146, ate a low carb breakfast, took my medication (500MG of Metformin), and it spiked to over 200 (212 to be exact, it's now beginning to come down.

To the guru's in this forum, what in the world could be happening here? I have been taking my Metformin regularly (500 morning and afternoon). Is this because the body is still adapting to the medicine? Any ideas? I mean I am diligently limiting my carb intake. This unpredictability is driving me crazy because of how dangerous these BG rises are. Thoughts?

One last question is, when do these high BG's actually begin to do damage, when they ocurr or when the BG levels remain up there for x-amount of time?

Thanks.

Luis, can you give us an idea of what you ate yesterday? Did you get less exercise than usual? I find if I have more carbs in the evenings...or eat later than usual, that my fastings are higher the next morning. What do your "typical" breakfasts consist of?

It can take the metformin 3-4 weeks to reach optimal results...and it may be that you'll need a higher dose to get the results you're looking for.

I believe the most damage occurs when your #s go high and stay that way for long periods of time.

Linda, I ate a handful of nuts/peanuts right after 9:00 PM last night but nothing more. That is why the 146 reading when I first woke up surprised me as it is normally below 100 most mornings.

I usually eat either a bowl of oatmeal (1/4 cup dry) cooked in soy milk and cinnamon with no sugar at all. I also drink a cup of decaff with soy milk and no sweetener at all. I alternate that with two whole wheat toasts with either peanut butter and cheese, ham and cheese or simply cheese.

Maybe I need a higher does to stabilize my readings but it puzzles me that my readings are below 110 most of the day and they do not rise above 140 during the day either. I exercise most days (a brisk 30 minute walk) and did so
yesterday evening too.

Are you feeling well physically? Our blood sugars do relate to stress (physical and mental) and if you're coming down with a cold or have a sinus infection, that type of thing, your #s will often elevate.

Many diabetics find that breakfast has to be their lowest carb meal of the day. Blood sugar loves to spike after breakfast!

You might wish to try eggs or meat for breakfast instead of toast or oatmeal. I know I could never get away with two pieces of toast for breakfast without a spike.

Also, instead of whole wheat, you may wish to look for low carb bread. Brownberry makes a "Carb Control" bread. There's another I can eat that's a flax bread.

i don't know much about oatmeal, but i think both of these breakfasts have about 60 grams of carbs.

that is twice as many carbs as i try to eat in a whole day!

as was suggested, try eggs and ham with no toast and black coffee.

see what your numbers look like ten and we will ave a decent baseline.
