Low blood sugar

I can always tell when I'm low...heart starts beating fast, light headedness, sweating, shaky hands, then I get dizzy & can't focus.....test...low 40's. I hate this feeling. Lately it's been every evening. What can I eat or drink to get back to as-semblance of normal??????

What meds are you taking, and what are you eating? Hard to suggest with more info.

Sorry...for meds I take.....

In the a.m., I take
Lopid 600 mg
Amaryl 4 mg
Metformin 500 mg
Actos 30 mg

In the p.m., I take
Lopid 600 mg
Metformin 500 mg x2

As for foods..I'm watching what I eat carb and sugar wise.

Does that help??

I would definately speak to your doctor about changing/lowering your meds - at least in the evening. You don't want to have a dangerous low. Make surethey understand your diet because low carbing does lower BG levels.

Here is the best way, I have found, to treat mild hypos:

There is nothing complicated about treating lows. You should always have glucose tablets on hand (your doctor should have told you to get some and to carry them at all times). All drug stores sell them. They come 10 in a tube, or 50 in a bottle. I buy tubes and refill them from the bottle. They come in different flavors, all of them yummy. I like the coconut flavor the best. You eat 4 tablets (about 15g carb), wait 15 minutes, and check your BG again. This is known as the 15/15 rule. Your BG should go up about 30 points.

I've also found that an apple works really quickly, too- but they are about 25 grams of carbs.

Cindel,

It sounds like you have made great progress, but you may be having mild reactive hypoglycemia. One thing you could try to avoid this in the evening is reducing the carbs in your dinner. This will reduce the insulin surge and blunt the hypoglycemia. It is better to avoid hypoglycemia than have to feel yucky and treat it. I would also suggest talking to your doctor about perhaps reducing some meds.

I would argue the other - you're taking too much medication and so you're having a more pronounced insulin response. Meaning you either need to eat MORE carbs, or reduce your medication.

I would get in touch with your doctor ASAP. I think your taking too much meds. Make sure you tell him/her about the low carb diet. A glass of milk always helps the numbers go up for me. I have never been below 59 either. Do not delay, You cannot live with lows like that everyday. I takes alot out of you. Good luck!
