| | Hi there yannah,
How long have you been taking it? From what I was told by my GP and have seen on here it can take up to a month to kick in fully...

| | | Yannah, Met takes 3-4 weeks, (in some cases a little longer) to get to its full acting capacity. How long have you been on met?
From what i have read here, people have discontinued met only because they can't handle its side effects (gas, diarrhea etc). I'm not sure if there are cases where met woudln't work.

| | | What else are you doing? Are you watching carbs, exercising, etc?
What dosage are you taking? Most people are started out at 500 mg once or twice day & it gets adjusted upward if necessary. |

| | | They say it can take up to 5 weeks to fully begin working - it will depend on your dose too, however. I started at 500mg twice a day and now take 1,000mg twice a day. Also, are you sure you're a type 2? I believe I'm a type 1.5 - and require insulin to really do the trick. What are your daily averages for fasting and 2 hours pp?

| | | it doesn't sound too bad, however, I would have your endo check you for 1.5 if your insurance allows it. You can always try increasing your metformin (with dr.'s permission) and/or trying insulin. I could not get my fasting under 170 without basal insulin, and not ever under 140 after meals as well.

| | | That's basically what happened to me. I was first diagnosed as Type 2. The dr. put me on 1 Metformin, then 2, then 3, then glipizide. With each change in dosage my numbers went higher. I was diagnosed with fasting bs at 131 and 117. This whole process started in Dec. of 2005 and finally in late April 2006 I was tested for T1 antibodies, etc. That's when they figured out that I am actually Type 1. For what it's worth, I was 32 when my symptoms of diabetes started. I am now 35.

| | | When I first started on Metformin a number of years ago, I was originally on the 500 mg twice a day.
Eventually that wasn't enough to keep my numbers good. My doctor raised it to 1000 twice a day, then eventually added Glyburide and Actos over the next few years.
I'm currently on 850 mg of met 3x a day along with Glyburide AND now recently, insulin.
It could be that you need a larger dose or another med added to the mix to see results.
In my case, as I got older, (or the longer I was on them) the meds became less effective.

I even had to take some laxatives. My doctor asked about the same symptoms that you mention, I said no, not at all.
