| | | just so you know...b12 so. I started metformin in august. last month I started having a tingly and on two occassions numbish toe then I started having muscle twitching. I asked my doctor, he thought it was my statin, took me off. but I still had twitching, thinks the tingling is my numbers coming crashing down. so i go on twitching...for days. so I call his office and he has little to say about it. this is my second doctor, can't seem to find a good one. so I look up muscle twitching on the internet. find b12 deffiency (sp?) so i know met can deplete b12, plus I am eating less than 800 calories a day (whole other issue) but I have not started taking b12. so I go get some liquid, sublingual b12. take it for 3 days, no more twitching...yet. I don't know about tingling, have not had that for a couple weeks.
why do I keep having to figure **** out on my own? I mean b12 depletion can cause permanent nerve damage. Why don't we just start taking it with metformin? too much can't hurt us.
I see an endo on the 8th, sure hope that goes better.

| | | Yannah,
Interesting to hear about B12 deficiency being linked to Metformin use. However as I understand it, our bodies require very little B12 and it is more normal for a vegan, not taking supplements to suffer from a B12 deficiency - don't get me wrong I'm not saying that this is not your problem, I am wondering if the cause of the problem might be your diet as opposed to the Metformin or possible a combination of the two.
I'm no expert (very far from it) on vitamins, but I believe that our bodies normally get B12 from things like eggs, dairy, fish, meat which is why some vegans experience problems.
Your calorie intake at 800 seems very low and I wonder if they food you are eating is providing the B12 or is the metformin impacting on very low levels of B12 that you are getting from food.
Do you mind me asking why your calorie intake is so low?

I don't for a moment doubt what you are saying about the link between Metformin and B12 deficiency but I would think it might be worth looking at what your eating too, 800 calories seems very low. Like I said I'm no expert, I do however like to delve a little deeper into things like this and appreciate the heads up on the B12 issue.

| | | Hi Dave the muscle twitching came back on the plane.
My calorie intake is for ****. I just can't want to eat since DX.
I keep loosing wieght at the speed of light. It probably has alot to do with my menstrual cycle being all screwed up and the diarrhea. who know what else. but i have no appetite at all.

| | | I've read that metformin can deplete B12...so I take a good multivitamin and a B12 supplement. So far, so good.
