First Report Card & a Question

I went to Dr last week for my first check-up since being diagnosed and have been anxiously awaiting the results which came in today. Given that so many of the members here have recently been reporting outstanding progress, I was worried that my progress wouldn't be what I was hoping for. Here is the before and after:

8/26/08 - weight 208 lbs, BP 130/90+, A1C 6.6, FBG 134, Triglycerides 212, Total Cholesterol 170

11/26/08 - weight 182 lbs, BP 107/78, A1C 5.7, FBG 111, Triglycerides 123, Cholesterol 121

I don't want to get too giddy over these results since this is just one data point in a long journey and this disease throws up many curveballs. One thing I am wondering about is my struggle with dawn phenomena/high early morning readings, and to this end, should I consider taking the metformin 2X/day given where I am at presently. Thoughts???

I have greatly appreciated the help and morale support from this forum; it makes the journey much easier when you know you are not alone and can learn from those more experienced.

Thanks

Awesome numbers Lancelot. I'm looking forward to my report card in a couple of days.

My highest readings were always upon waking and before breakfast. Along the way, as my belly size shrunk, they fell into line to where they are great (80's).

Regular exercise, which I added in the last month or so, has really tightened my range to where there is not alot of variation (75-98) over the course of the day.

Alot of people claim that wine helps their morning numbers. Or some carbs with fats, usually peanut butter is mentioned. I haven't tried either one.

Congrats on the weight loss. Makes you feel like a completely different person, doesn't it?

Super progress! Give yourself a big pat on the back.

Talk to your doctor about your Metformin dosage. I'm taking 2000 mg per day, my latest A1c was 5.2 and I've lost about 80 or so pounds since January. My suggestion would be to stay with it for now, and keep doing everything else you're doing. The Met will continue to help you achieve your goals. I would like to get rid of some of my meds, too, but at this point in time, until I get A LOT closer to my goal weight, I'm staying with the meds I'm on.

You have made great progress in a short time. What you're doing is very obviously working. Congratulations on your good results from your hard work!

I also struggled with high morning numbers. I found the following worked for me. As everyone is different it may not work for you.

1 Make your last meal at least 3 1/2 to 4 hours before bedtime. (Try to get your numbers as low as you are comfortable with)

2 Eat a small snack (I usually eat cheese and crackers or peanut butter and crackers followed by a glass of red wine - abt. 6-8 ozs.) AT BEDTIME

3 Instead of eating snack at bedtime sometimes I prepare peanut butter and crackers and keep beside bed with a glass of water. If you are like me you make a trip to bathroom in the middle of night. When I get up I eat the peanut butter and crackers and drink the water.

4. Eat breakfast. My numbers will continue to go up if I don't eat.

I have managed to reduce my morning numbers from 120 -130 to 105 -115.

EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT experiment and keep trying.

Keep up the good work. You are looking good.

Everyone, thanks for the encouragement. I need to try that late night snack with peanut butter and see if the pb works. I have tried some other late night ~ 15g carb snacks and I still wake up with high readings.

The thing that is odd, I normally wake up ~ 5:15 AM, test around 6:00 AM and then eat breakfast, but if I get up later and test 7:30 AM or later, the readings tend to be lower. During the day, and throughout the early evening, my readings stay reasonably consistent.

My diet certainly isn't low carb, as I typically consume 175g or more per day. Perhaps, I should try cutting that down some more.

Best Regards,

Doug
