So I have this funny story to tell about when I found out I had Diabetes (not that finding out was funny, just what happened after) but there wasn't really a good place to tell it so I thought here might be ok
I was 22 when I found out in October 2003 that I had Diabetes. I was living with my (now ex) husband, Mike in California. He's a Marine and we were stationed there. I was devistated naturally and my mom was the first person I called. I cried and tried to go about my day. That same evening after I called my mom, I get a phone call from my younger brother. He was 17 at the time. He says to me "Mom told me what you had." I said yes, it's true, but don't worry, I'm going to be ok so try not to worry too much" My brother then says very angrily "I'm going to kill Mike for giving you diabetes!!!" ....
What could I do? I was stunned for a moment, then I just busted out in hysterical laughter. Explaining to a 17 year old that Diabetes is not an STD was the strangest thing I ever had to do. I learned 2 things that day... (1) Even when you find out something bad, there's always something to put a smile on your face. (2) There are probably a lot of people out there like my brother who don't know much about Diabetes.
Needless to say, my brother is 22 now, and I still don't let him live that conversation down
Consider that a bedtime story, I'm off to bed now. Thanks for listening
