Hypoglycemic

I was diagnosed type 2 last fall. My first experience with going hypoglycemic was in May when I was outside gardening. My doctor said I went too long without eating. Since then I have gone low several times with bs around 70-90. I will take some sugar then eat something, but I continue to drop. Last week when I went low I still felt shaky and tired days later. Then a couple days ago my bs was at 110. I got the shakes really bad, confusion, crying, I had a difficult time talking. I can't imagine why I'd feel so bad at 110. Does anyone else go hypoglycemic when they aren't below 70?

No but I did when first diagnosed.

It is an indication that you might be spiking or running too high, if you perceive lows that high. Have you had an A1c recently?

The other thing is it sounds like you might be dropping too rapidly. What meds are you on? What are you eating - -how many carb g per day?

I feel that way when I drop too rapidly. Last week, I droped from 120 points in 45 minutes. Way too much of a drop too quickly.

Are you testing your blood sugars often? If you're running high, your body sees these high #s as normal. When your #s start to normalize, even normal #s can feel low as your body is more used to its normal higher #s. This usually resolves as your blood sugar levels stay at better levels for longer periods of time.

What meds do you take for your diabetes?

I'm taking 2000mg Metformin a day. My A1c in June was 6.7.
Earlier this year it was 6.2, so its gone up. I normally don't check my my #'s very often as my doctor said it wasn't necessary, but I do when I start feeling shaky.

What is considered a fast drop, 10, 20, 50 in an hour?

I'd encourage you to check your blood sugars more often, esp. 2 hrs after meals. If you're feeling low often, yet your
A1C is 6.7 (this is equal to an average 90 day BS of 161) , you're going high at times as well....you're just not aware of it when you're not testing. Watching your carbs and avoiding the foods that cause your blood sugar to elevate may do away with these low feelings you are having.

As for what a fast drop is, I don't know of any specific rules with that. I find I need something more like 120 mg/dl drop in an hour, or maybe 100 mg/dl in 30 min for the vertical speed to create really unpleasant side effects. And yes, if you reach that point, it can really, really stuff you up. I would assume the threshold would be different from person to person.

To me it sounds more likely a case as explained, of being acclimatised to a higher level, and this lower level with any sense of dropping is registered as a hypo when it is not. The answer is to grit teeth and wait out the unpleasant sensation for a while, if it persists. I know you might have a gut reaction to eat to allieviate the feeling of low, but for now you need to be guided by your meter, not the body feedback. It should get better within a few days if you keep your BG at a more normal level.

Thank you for your responses. When I was diagnosed last fall I was at 6.7, then got it down to 6.2, and now I'm back up again. I used to check my #s more in the begining so I could see how I reacted to the foods I ate. The highest I've been was at 200...pizza doesn't like me. I just don't check anymore, but I guess I still should.

I woke up this morning was at 150 and an hour later was at 138 and now I feel shaky again. I haven't ate anything because my numbers are high. Am I approaching this the right way??? My #s are like this in the morning. Should I not eat until they go down?

I'd encourage you to eat breakfast, regardless of your #s, just make sure you have a low-carb b/fast such as eggs or a protein shake even if your #s are high. Toast or oatmeal may make them go even higher.

For me, if I don't eat, my blood sugars will continue to rise.

I really appreciate everyone's feedback. I am going to start taking my bs more often and paying more attention to my numbers. I'm going to keep a log book for a couple months and we'll see how it goes. Let the fun begin!
