thanks for all the info everyone! I learned more hear than I have on the trips to the doctors of the diabetic nurse counselor thing they have here. That second person seemed more like a shrink than anything else.

Well, its time for porky to get movin, shake the bacon out of me! Maybe at least get down to a nice lean ham size.

Many/most Type 2's can be helped greatly by just losing 10% if needed. Some Type 2's are not overweight at all.

The most important thing is to exercise. Do this and hopefully the weight issue will take care of itself. Loosing weight is not the goal-- it's the result of exercise and diet changes. Controlling Type 2 is NOT about weight loss. It's about changes in your lifestyle with diet and exercise and the end result, if needed, will hopefully be weight loss.
You are very wrong and I worry that misleading statements like this may be mistaken by some readers as fact. BOTH weight loss and exercise help control diabetes, as does cutting your carb intake.

A normal BMI is very reasonable goal (although don't treat the BMI as an absolute standard, YMMV). Your 10% is a figure plucked out of the air - people should loose as much or as little as they have to get their weight down (and I don't mean starve). Someone who is approaching obese, your phrase, is about 20% overweight. Plenty of us are >25% overweight at diagnosis - so try and loose it.

A lower body weight delivers less insulin resistance - whether or not you exercise.
