Hicama as a substitute for fruit

Hicama has some of the characteristics of a fruit and doesn't seem to affect my BS at all. I am currently eating about 4-5 slices along with a few almonds, olives, and a bit of cheese as my after-test snack at bedtime.

This thing requires a bit of prep (peel skin and then cut into slices) but has a pleasant fruit-sweet taste and a somewhat fibrous texture with plenty of moisture within.

Has anyone else had experience with this critter?

In California's hot summers I used to eat a lot of all kinds of fruits out of a big bowl of pre-sliced chunks. Don't dare try this now!

Now that my BS control is considerably better I intend to carefully and individually test some of my favorite fruits to see if I can tolerate some of them in small amounts. I know apple doesn't appear to be very good for me at this point.

wlh34 I love Jicama and often use it in a salad. It isn't that sweet and for me has a taste more like a water chestnut. I have never tested it specifically to check if it spikes my BG but salads in general don't seem to.

I can tolerate strawberries, apple, and about 1/2 a banana. Everything else is off-limits. The worst is pineapple, orange, and blueberry.

Blackberries, strawberries and grapefruit are great for me. Raspberries, cherries and oranges are OK. Sadly, my all time favorite fruit, watermelon, hates me - it's on the "No Eat" list forever more

Growing up we used to eat jicama all the time. It is great with some lemon juice and cayenne pepper (cucumbers are great this way too). It is also good in salads, sliced or peeled over lettuce.

Now that I live in Wisconsin it is just hard to find and expensive

My friendly fruits are apples, bananas and pears (all in small amounts). I got bad spikes from pineapple and watermelon.

Blueberries,1/3 cup in Greek yogurt or 1/3 of apple that I share with my husband ,are my fruit treats so far. Will try blackberries as soon as they ripen. Important to watch not only what fruits but how much. It amazes me how much I used to eat of everything.
