      Update on mom.

As some of you know I'm here to help control my mom's D and get her tolerate metformin and control her numbers with met or switch her to something else.

      Mom is 77 years old.

For you that don't know, mom was throwing up a lot, getting headaches, GERD, and more issues than that with the Met.

She used to take Diabenese when she was Diagnosed with D 30yrs ago, but her new doctors switched her to Met after having stents put in her heart.

Her heart is great, but the Met was really making her life miserable. She was getting tons of headaches and all the Gerd and Intestinal issues that are common with some Met users.

      Well the HEADACHES ARE GONE

No headaches for 1 1/2 weeks. We have kept her numbers under 210 and it seems that her headaches started about that time.

When she first felt the headaches comming we gave her water, and that stopped them in there tracks. They began behind her head and ended up as Ice-Pick headaches. Mom was getting headaches off and on for about 1 1/2 yrs, since starting on Met. They seem to be behind her.

I think that I can say her headaches are gone due to all the great help and input I have gotten from members of this board.

      THANK YOU VERY, VERY MUCH.

      More news.

I don't live with mom but I try to stay at her home twice a week to help my sister and mom get informed about D and suggest new things to try to control D.

My sister is really trying to get mom's numbers under control.

Unfortionatly, she was trying to get mom's numbers down by continiously reducing her diet. The problem was that mom was on a high carb diet and it seemed to escape my sister.

Mom was having oatmeal in the morning, had gotten tired of chicken salad and replaced salads with fresh fruits.

Well when I got home this Saterday, mom had not had any headaches for a week, but she looked real down and depressed and appeared malnutritioned. Her numbers were avg about 135.

So I educated my sister to cut down on the Oatmeal, no fruits for now, and jump on Tuna, Peanut Butter, Nuts, More Egg and less oatmeal in the morning.

Two hours later after getting at moms house we gave her a higher protien based meal, some nuts, and very little carbs. We still gave her some baby carrots for her eyes. Lots of water. A garlic Supplement.

Mom was feeling Great Saterday and Today is doing well. The Gerd is pretty much gone. Met is not giving us problems. No headaches.

Her BG after breakfeast, was 145. She still craves the oat meal and we just can't get her off it that fast, but slowly we will trim it down. That is probobly what is spiking her.

We have her on more water, especially when she feels a little Gerd comming to dillute the acids produced in the stomach and that is working. It also relieves the craving for food; I read that when people are hungry drinking water reduces the craving for food and dilutes acids in the stomach. My theory is that it quits down the stomachs Pavlov effect and trains your stomach not to get too excited at the first sign of hunger. When I get hungry I first drink water, it works for me.

Mom is up and around and very energic today. Comparing her to yesterday it's a 180 degree turn in energy level.

I want to thank everyone on this board for the help and suggestions.

We still have some work to do on her numbers and tuning in her diet, but I think we will get there.

I wil keep you guys posted. I know that some people are still having problems with the digestive issues of Met and getting the numbers in line. So what works for her might help others.

      Thanks Again

That's great! I'm so glad she is tolerating the met better now Give her a pat on the back for me.

Getting back on the wagon... been a long trip through denialville!

Started metformin back on 9/3/10; gained back 5 pounds (but about to change that!)

      Stats before my deviation:
      Metformin 2000 mg
      7/24/09 a1c=9.3
      10/23/09 a1c=6.4
      Diagnosed 7/22/09
Weight loss as of 10/23/09: 25 pounds!

Always good to hear that Mom is doing better

I'm sure you've already heard but just in case... I noticed a tip on a TV show last night for GERD... a couple of blocks under the head of the bed... just a few inches so it still feels like you are lying down but apparently it can make all the difference.

It may also help your Mom if she sleeps with an extra pillow. That was one suggestion by my current doctor for my acid reflux. Very glad to hear your Mom is getting some of her issues resolved. When I cared for my Mother it was kind of hard to convince her that the changes I suggested were to make her feel better.

On the oatmeal, how 'bout half her usual portion, along with some lower-carb foods? I have found 1/2 the carbs lowers my spike in blood sugar by more than half ... maybe it would be enough?

Also, has she had a sleep study done? My husband has not had GERD since he got a CPAP.

Thats exactly our game plan but at the moment we are sort of at a lost for higher protien based foods that she can have for breakfeast.

What do you recommend other than:

      1. Nuts
      2. Peanut butter.
      3. Tuna, Chicken, Fish, she doesn't like beef.

The culprits of her high BG were:

      1. Bread
      2. Too much oat Meal
      3. Fruits during the day:

...so getting them out of the picture is definatly going to help.

Cheese is also great for protein, especially for snacks and such!

All excellent advice, and all are things that have helped me. If you don't wanna tilt the whole bed, get a bed wedge & it'll do the trick, either with or without a pillow. They come in different "heights" from 6-7" to about 12".

      Thank Granny

Mom has some of those but we never thought of usiing them when her GERD was acting up. They are great.

I bought one my self to watch TV when my back acts up.

Last Nighth I actually sleep all night with one. The best sleep I had I a long time. My mid back isn't acting up as bad today. I think it just might solve my back problem due to being hunched over a laptop!!!

That's exactly my experience! I also use a leg wedge with the upper body wedge - it sorta replicates a leaned-back recliner position - so once I get situated & my CPAP on, I can sleep for even 10-12 hours and wake up with NO aches/pains. NONE! It's totally incredible and I had no idea I'd get results like that. All I was trying to do is learn to sleep on my back so I wasn't forever bumping the CPAP mask loose. I knew I could sleep fine in a recliner, so I just tried the wedges on the outside chance . . . and it felt like a miracle!

Well I have to sleep on the floor, I've already bought 3 beds and I just can't sleep in one. I wake up all stiff and my neck is tweeked. I developed a scoliosis from Laptop Computer and weird position the laptop mouse puts in. I use an external mouse now, but I'm so twisted that just about every sitting position know to man doesn't work for me. I think I need to be upside down when I'm on computers( that's why there are so many spelling errors in my posts, it just hurt too much to go back an correct things).

Anyhow, I sleep on the floor now and placed two of those feather mattress pads on the floor. My neck gets tweeked when I turn to my side. Sleeping on those comforters keeps me from having to turn on my side. .... I slept 8 1/2 hrs straight last night. Wow , that is a record for me, I usually remember when I have to turn on my side, it wakes me up.

Glad you confirmed that, I'm going to sleep on mine for a week see how my back feels. lol

Eggs & Bacon with one slice of toast with butter or find some recipes with Tofu. For snacks, try some edamane steamed with some salt. I love them.

We use the TableMate II with our laptop, & it sits between our respective recliners so either of us can pull it around to our easy chair & surf in comfort!
