Can anybody clear this up for me

It's been 6 months since my diagnosis and I'm still not sure of the correct answer. When we speak of testing two hours post prandial, are we looking for a number 140 or under, or are we looking for a return to our pre-meal level?

If I test at 84 before lunch and then test two hours afterward, should my numbers be back to 84? I very rarely have that happen. If my number is an 84 before lunch it is usually hovering two hours later at around 105 or sometimes if I'm lucky, in the mid 90's. Which number should I be looking at so I'm not driving myself crazy.

Basically, healthy numbers are whatever YOU consider healthy.. the recommendation by the ADA or whatever is to be under 140 two hours after meals. A lot of folks shoot for lower than that, and some folks shoot to be back at their original level.

I also find it hard to be back to the original level after only 2 hours. That link is a good one though.

I just reread my post and realized that I probably didn't help to answer your question at all. I hope it helps, though..

It's my understanding that your 2 hours post prandial should be under 140. Some literature says under 160.

I use 100 as my magic number for everything. If I am 100 before or 100 2 hours postprandial, I am happy.

Wow, MsMia, good for you. If your numbers are starting at that point and coming back down to that point, you are doing wonderfully.

Your number doesn't need to return to the baseline at all. Sometimes, depending on what you eat, you may find the two hour post prandial lower than the premeal - I still remember the first meal that did that to me - broiled Italian hot sausage and roasted red and green peppers, ahhhhh!

In general, people consider remaining under 140 to be safe. But different people have different goals and capabilities. I choose to aim much lower (100), but that's just me. A goal anything much higher than 140 isn't good though, IMO.

I'm with you Nancy. To me, that is an extremely lofty goal (and one that's probably not attainable for all), but it is doable for me, so that's what I'm shooting for.

141 is when I head for the steps. If i'm eating a lower carb meal, there's usually no issue with even being over 100 at the 2 hr. When I know i'm going to have something more "carby," I'll make sure it's when I can move around a bit more afterwards, just in case it goes over 140.

I usually try to get back to where I started or no more than 20-30 over if I start around 120. My pre-meal test sometimes determines what I will eat.

I'm on an insulin pump, and expect to be within 5 points of where I was pre meal, by 2 hrs. Usually more like 90 minutes, but I don't test then, just see that on my cgms.

We're all different.
