Insulin vs. Oral Meds

Hello All,

This is my first post and I'm not sure if there is any one answer to my question.

I have been on oral meds for about 10 years, Lantus for a couple years and Humalog for about 6 months.

After almost a decade of bad control due to poor diet, no exercise, and most of all, not taking my meds regularly, I have finally "gotten it" and have been taking the meds faithfully for about 6 months. My control is currently good. My carb intake is still high (200g/day) and my exercise level is still low. My hope and assumption is, if I can get better control of diet and exercise, my meds can be reduced.

My question is should my goal or expectation (obviously with Dr's input) be to lower or eliminate the insulin or the oral meds first? Specifically speaking I realize that many will point to the avandia and say to drop that first. Generally speaking however, which can potentially do more harm, the insulin or oral meds?

That all depends on how much insulin your body is still making.

What does your doctor say? (Were you aware that, at the top of the official Avandia website (www(dot)avandia(dot)com), there is a warning that says: "Taking AVANDIA with insulin or nitrates is not recommended"?)

Stay away from Avandia its a killer, ask your doctor. Do your legs or ankles swell? Avandia is known to cause terrible heart problems and even death. I thought they took that off the market and I would ask your doc why he would give you something like that.
