Does it Never End????

Ok just got back from Doc's (again!!) Now I have UTI (uniary tract infection!!). What I thought was my usual monthly's - wasn't - not enought show and only when I pee (excuse moi) was never evidence of blood! - Apparently quite common for women with D ( so I was told by my doc!!). So now more antiboiotics (Yuk) and rest. No wonder I was so exhausted ... going into my second week with this infection- what with Jellyfish stings, allergy reaction etc, etc - it almost makes me want to go out and eat a HUGE CREAM DONUT!!!!

You may benefit from having a urine specimen checked after you finish your antibiotics to make sure the medicine did the job. Wait a few weeks after finishing your last tablet/capsule and then ask your Dr. if this is possible.Sometimes, an infection gets knocked down but not out. When you finish your medicine, the left over infection just lays there only to become active again . Maybe not enough to have systoms, just enough to cause a repeat infection. Drink lots of water and good old cranberry juice. Lots of luck. Spent most of my adult life fighting UTI's. We ladies don't go to the bathroom enough and don't drink enough water. Again, good luck.

flowerbabe68 : Thanks Flowerbabe68 - My doc took a sample to send away for testing as he was a bit concerned that I had no signs prior to bleeding. Yes I have had UTI's several times - way before I was even dx ( even way before having kids!) The antibiotics are quite strong and have to take 4 x a day! I have only taken 3 since prescribe and the bleeding as already ceased! But am slowly regaining my energy back ...but woe my BS went skyrocketing Only to be expected I guess!

Step slowly away from the donut and no one will be hurt.

Sorry, just a little attempt at humor. Sorry you are having to go through all of this.

ODAR, you know you have to finish your antibiotics no matter how quickly you feel better. That UTI could come back even stronger.. if you stop the meds.. Antibiotics have to be completed every time..

Good luck!!

Hey Grant - Yes I know - don't worry - I'm not just gonna stop the meds - I know I have to finish them. My doc has already given me a script for all bloodworks to be done in January 10: He is super cautious - especially being a diabetic ( his words, not mine!)

And - don't worry - the donuts didn't come near my UTI !! Unfortunately - I hav'nt had much of an appetite the last few days - so that and antibiotics has thrown my BS all over the place!!

If I don't drink enough water, I end up with a UTI. I love diet coke and drink it ALOT, however, I make sure to drink plenty of water too. I have learned this from experience!
I am sorry that you are having to go through this, it's the pits~

I used to get UTI's at least 6 times a year before I started to control my diabetes. I still have to be careful cause I can get them at the drop of a hat, sucks. I read at the mayo clinic site that this is common for people with diabetes even though my doc says it is not.

So sorry you have to go thru this/ Yuck.. Had a UTI only once -- and NO FUN.. As for your stomach while on an anti-biotic -- you're going to thank me. Go to your local drug store and pick up a bottle of Acidophalus (in the A's of the Vitamin aisle) -- chewables or the caplets. It's bacterial flora for the stomach. Take about 2 each meal while you're on the antibiotics and about a week beyond the last pill taken. As you may know - antibiotics kills the GOOD AND the BAD bacteria in the body and your stomach needs the good bacteria for you to feel 'normal' in the stomach.. As soon as a friend turned me on to this -- all stomach issues while on antibiotics went away for me. It'll clear the stomach issues right up.

You have gotten some very helpful information from your post. One of the warning signs of a uti for me was the draggy and unrelentless tiredness I would have. Every time this feeling came over me, I had a uti and you're right that you feel better quickly on antibiotics. But as you have been told already, finish the antibiotics completely. Never heard of the acidophalus but makes sense. Yogurt also helps reestablish good bacterial flora in your body that gets knocked out by the antibiotics. The medicine kills everything, good and bad. This is how diarrhea often develops in patients taking antibiotics. I haven't had a uti for a long time. But the theory that diabetes makes you more prone to a uti may be based on the fact that uncontrolled diabetes makes sugar spill over into your urine, which may encourage bacterial growth. Not sure of this, tho. The female anatomy is the major culprit for encouraging utis, along with not flushing the bladder often enough. Hope you soon feel better.

Thanks everyone for your valuable insight into UTI's - and yes Grant is right - every time we consume antibiotics we kill of the good and bad bacteria. I will get some inter flora probiotics today - as my stomach gets upset every time I take the antibiotics! Actually when I think about it - this is the second time this year I had it. First time was right in the beginning of the year (way before Dx) and just now. I wonder how long I have been have D without knowing??? As for lethargy - I am feeling less tired but still not as energetic as I was. I am still exercising, but I think by the time the weekend comes around - I will surely be back to my "normal" self

Here's a personal question (you opened the personal door). Are you married and/or having a steady physical relationship? If so the very same germies that are causing your UTI could be inhabiting your mate and once you have gotten over the UTI they could give them right back to you again. Your partner should also be checked for the same germies and be given the antibiotics if positive.
