There are lots of great holiday recipes posted here. If you're not doing the cooking think about making one side dish and bringing it with you. Try and stick to the proteins and vegetable side dishes. Depending on how many carbs you have at a meal, you might be able to squeeze in a small portion of a potato dish but try to pick one that's not too heavily sugared. It won't be that bad at all.

Lotta stuff on the table during the holidays. Imagine fixing a plate for a 1-year-old child. A little bit of this...a little bit of that. Now, instead of giving it to the child...you eat it. When you've finished your plate you're still going to be right in the middle of a social feading frenzy. Get up, excuse yourself, and go for a walk. Try to time the walk so that when you come back all the leftovers have been wrapped up and stuck in the refrigerator. STAY OUT OF THE REFRIGERATOR!!

I don't think Carbs count at Thanksgiving surely there is some law somewhere that states that??

I say enjoy your holidays! It is one day, one meal...so have what you want (within reason of course). If you want to eat mashed potatoes, have a small serving.

If you are in charge of bring a dish, bring something you can enjoy a large helping of. If you're cooking, make several things you can enjoy.

Have more turkey than stuffing, more green beans than potatoes. Ignore the corn or mac and cheese. Have a sliver of pumpkin pie. Only eat one plate of food, and send the tempting leftovers home with the others. Don't let diabetes cause you so much stress that you can't enjoy your day. It's only one meal!

You'll be having many Thanksgivings and Christmas celebrations on your diabetic journey. Find a way to enjoy them that works for you.

I stressed out so much that first Thanksgiving, worrying so much about food...what shall I eat, what will it do to me....that I truly didn't enjoy the celebration and time with family at all. Now, I tell myself "it's only one meal," and I enjoy that meal with my family. Surprisingly, relaxing and enjoying the food, family and fun didn't raise my blood sugar nearly as much as I first anticipated.

Linda, didn't you have a recipe for low carb pumpkin pie? Or something similar to it? If it were you I would love to have that recipe.

I have made a pumpkin pie following the recipe on the back of the Libby's canned pumpkin (NOT the pumpkin pie filling, just plain canned pumpkin) and substituted Splenda for the sugar (watch the pie crust though). I've also made a pumpkin cheese cake using splenda and the recipe inside the Philadelphia Cream Cheese box, adding pumpkin and pumpkin pie spice to the mix.

My dad usually makes the Thanksgiving pumpkin pies...he uses a field pumpkin and it is the best ever. I usually forego it on Thanksgiving, taking a small "to-go" piece to have later. He only makes them once a year and, for me, it's truly worth any blood sugar rise I might have. Saving it for the next day allows me to minimize the blood sugar response though.

I found this recipe and thought I would make it. The nutritional analysis is at the end of the recipe. Does this recipe sound safe for low carb?
I am going to chop pecans and mix them with a little melted butter and press into pie pan...bake a few minutes and then add the pumpkin mix.

OR does someone have a better recipe, as I found this one online.
SERVES 8

Ingredients

* 1 1/2 cups fresh or canned pumpkin
* 3 eggs (I will use 1 egg and 2 egg whites)
* 3/4 cup Splenda sugar substitute
* 1/2 teaspoon salt
* 1 teaspoon cinnamon
* 1/4 teaspoon clove or 1 3/4 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
* 3/4 cup cream

Directions

1 Mix all ingredients together.
2 Pour into a well sprayed pie pan.
3. Bake at 350' for 30 to 40 minutes.

Linda, This is my first Diabetic holiday and honestly I've been dreading it. I've been making great progress in the past six weeks and I'm working hard every day to keep it up. Thank you for your positive words. I greatly appreciate them. I hope you and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving. You sure helped me start looking forward to mine!

Seriously, though .... I like Bountyman's advice. I'll try that this season.

I "gift-recycle" the food that people give to me during the holidays, or I share the food with my colleagues. It is after all the season for giving and sharing (I sound like a Hallmark card).

When I go to parties or dinners, I spend a lot of time mingling with the other guests or talking to the person next to me and/or in front of me at the dinner table. That takes my mind off food. In this sense, I don't act differently than I usually do when I go to parties or dinners during the rest of the year. The problem arises when I happen to be in a boring party or my dinner table neighbors are boring ....
