| | | fruit experiment First book I happened to get my hands on back in June after diagnosis was the
book by Bernstein. He said/bragged that he hadn't eaten any fruit in 20 years.
Made sense to me since fruits are loaded with carbs. I haven't eaten any since June.
Well, while I'm waiting in the doctor's office yesterday I'm reading yet another
pamphlet about diabetes where they are extolling the virtues of fresh fruit. Not
having a whole lot to do today and having my own body to experiment on, I thought
I'd eat some to see what happened.
I did not take a reading before lunch but past experience tells me that my BG was
probably in the upper 80s to to mid 90s.
I took a 500 mg metformin. I ate a hot dog (bun, weenie, cheddar cheese, jalapeno).
2 hours later my BG was 128. About what I expected based on past experience.
I then ate a banana and a tangerine.
One hour later my BG was 127! ????
Two hours later my BG was 117
Three hours later is was 97
What the heck is going on? Can I start eating fruit? This makes no sense to me. |

| | I've found that eating fresh fruit (bananas & apples mostly) with a bit of cheese (sharp cheddar...yum) will raise my BG by 9pts at 2 hrs. That I can live with . Frank here turned me onto that nifty little trick and it works like a charm for me, gie it a try and see if it works for you as well.

| | | Not all fruit affects you the same way, you might try it again and your bs would skyroctet than some other fruit might work. Hey if it works then maybe you can eat bannas again, I just would eat them in moderation and check again |

| | Today I shared a bowl of cherries which were very sweet and raspberries with my grand kids. My bg 2 hrs later 111. I can live with that considering at the first of the year I averaged around 350. In the mail today I received my latest bg results HgA1c 6.7 with a note "good". What does Hg mean? |

| | | Half a banana, okay.
Half an apple, okay.
Half a cup of blueberries, okay.
Half a cup of strawberries, okay.
Quarter cup of blackberries, WHAM.
YMMV ... be thankful!

| | | Plus, don't forget that you are taking metformin, which generally helps your body/cells respond to insulin so your cells can easily accept and use your blood sugar.
Keep experimenting to see which fruits you can tolerate and how much. Not only are they chockful of good stuff, they also widen the variety of food you eat. |

| | | Shake it with milk Try fruit-full cream milk shake, especially for bananas. Avocado too, is really tasty if you add milk with it... Add more milk so it is drinkable.. Woow, it is yummy. Put a little splenda, will make it more tasty...
I was once in Mexico, even they, were surprised that I had avocado that way..

What does Hg mean? | Hg means "hemoglobin." "HgA1c", "HbA1c" and "A1c" all refer to the same thing.

| | | Be wary of basing your BG management decisions on a single observation... others have reported how they can "challenge" their BG after a period of resting it... doesn't mean they are "cured" or can eat that way all the time.
