    "Diabetic-'friendly'" foods

    Hey all,

I've been wondering about a few foods I have seen as "diabetic-friendly" (but not, "Hey this has got 0 carbs and 0 sugar! Drink all you want!")

Has anyone heard good/bad things about...

    Trop50?

    Truvia

    Mission Tortillas: Carb Balance

    Smuckers 1/2 sugar Jams

    ?

If you've found a little piece of "Diabetic-friendly" heaven from the "outside world", post it here.

    Thanks everyone!
    -Mitch

Truvia is the only one of those mentioned that I use. For the most part I ignore the claims and go straight for the ingredients/nutrition part of the label. If it has any ingredient spelled with "ose" (with the possible exception of sucralose), that means it has "sugar alcohol carbs"; if it has any relative of corn - that is, corn syrup or corn syrup solids, high fructose corn syrup - then it has plain old run-of-the-mill sugar/starch carbs. Any and all of these can spike your blood glucose.

Anything that tells you it is diabetic-friendly or no-sugar-added is cause for suspicion. The only way to know is to eat it and test your blood an hour later. If it spikes you then it's to be avoided if you wish to maintain good control.

There are plenty of products that don't make such promises and yet they are safe . . . I use a low-carb high-fiber tortilla from LaTortilla Factory that totally respects my bg, even though it's made with whole wheat flour, which usually sends me to the moon. Trial & error is about the only method we have for this part of the journey, since each of us is affected so differently by each different food.

Yep, don't bother with those special Diabetic sweets or jams. These contain sugurs with ols in them, Sorbitol, polyols, etc. Actually eating too much of them will make you loose wait............ on the toilet! They are a lazative. They can be OK, but ONLY in small doses.

I tried a small diabetic chocolate bar last week and 3h later, I knew about it!

I bought a jar of no sugar added jam & it rose my bG considerably, I will no longer eat it. Upon further inspection, it has been sweetened with grape juice. Now I make my own sf jam, its simple, & tastes wonderful, best of all, I know what is in it. I used frozen strawberries, & spenda & a pack of freezer jam pectin, you don't even need mason jars, as you store it in the freezer. I make alot of jams, but this was my first sf venture & I was very pleased with the result, try it, I would avoid any commercial low sugar jam, at least based on my BGs.

I really enjoy Trop50. I've come to like it more than regular OJ; it's thicker and better flavor. Instead of a big glass, I'll have about 1/2 a small glass (water back) and it doesn't blow my sugar.

I like Breyers Carb smart ice cream bars..yummy.

9 grams of carbs, and don't taste different from regular ice cream bars--at least to me.

the recipe for the sugar free jams is right on the back of the freezer pectin packets, I used 3 bags of thawed frozen strawberries, splenda & the pectin, & its wonderful, I gave a jar to a non diabetic friend & she loves it too. What I love about it, is its simplicity, there is no cooking involved & even a child could do it, unsupervised. I get my freezer jam pectin at the local Ace hardware, but I imagine lots of places have it. I have it on one of my flax muffins YOu can use fresh or frozen fruits.

I use lo carb tortillas and skippy's natural peanut butter, i am a fan of Mexican food: using tortillas for anything I'd use bread for wasn't that big a stretch for me.
