Best meds for hackijng cough or type 2??

      Hi all,

I was wondering if Mucinex DM Is best OTC cough med that I can take, right now I am on glyburide 5mg and 100mg of Januvia? I took one this afternoon and was scared to find out that it was 1200 mg, my doctor said it was alright but said to ask for the "Sugar-free" version which also baffled me since I didnt remember seeing that version ever for Mucinex...

      Thank you

DJT, no OTC meds do anything for a cough. I don't know how they get away with advertising that junk, because none of it does anything to help with a cough.

Many years ago, I stopped into a pharmacy on my way home from work, because I had a bad cough and wanted to pickup something for it. After looking at all the cough meds, I looked up and noticed that the pharmacist was watching me. I walked over to him and asked him if the cough meds were any good, and he said no, they were all pretty much worthless.

He then asked me what type of cough I had, so I told him. He asked for my driver's license, and then he went into the back and mixed up something. He came back out and gave me this bottle of orange liquid, and told me to take it as needed.

I went home, took one teaspoon of it, and my cough disappeared. I mean, it never came back! I noticed on the bottle he gave me that it contained 5% codeine. That's what helped. Ever since the government stepped in and stopped drug companies from putting codeine in cough syrup, the cough syrups have been worthless.

What they should have done was to require that you be at least 21 to purchase any cough syrup with codeine....maybe keep the cough syrup behind the counter, and dispense it to people when they showed some ID to prove their age. I mean, jeez, a lot of pharmacies sell booze, and they require you to show ID to buy that, so why not do the same thing with cough syrups?

The Mucinex is very good to break up any mucus you have in your lungs. I would suggest continuing with that. It will not do anything for cough.

I agree that codeine products were the best. But none are available OTC. So the nest bet is a sugar free cough syrup with dextromethorphan. Most pharmacies do have sugar free product.

But check your own meds before you take dextromethorphan . . . it interacts with quite a number of common drugs.

      Hi Guys,

Thanks for the caring responses, I have taken a total of 2 so far between yesterday and today and feel some tightness on both of my arms, I called my dr and told me since I am still coughing that the tightness is a result of bronchospasms and just to relax. I got the cough from both my manager and 2 months on Lisinopril. He prescribed me Cozaar and 50 mg but told me to take half.

Should I be worried about the slight tightness and "warm" feeling on my arms?
