Post FDA approves Byetta

FYI, Saw this news release on Yahoo today:

Type 2 diabetics got a new option to help control their blood sugar Friday, a drug derived from the saliva of the Gila monster — but one that must be injected twice a day.

The Food and Drug Administration approved Byetta, known chemically as exenatide, the first in a new class of medications for Type 2 diabetes — but for now, it's supposed to be used together with older diabetes drugs, not alone.

Makers Amylin Pharmaceuticals and Eli Lilly & Co. said the prescription drug would begin selling by June 1, but wouldn't provide a price.

Ya we heard about that while it was being processed. That sucks that it is put into injections for Type 2. If their orals aren't working, they can already take Insulins that work for them with injections.

According to the article, Byetta would work by reducing bg only if it was high, thus reducing the risk of going low by miscalculating an insulin dose. Therefore, if it actually works, I guess it would be an improvement for T2s.

Well, I usually take 2 shots of Humalog a day (I'm assuming Novalog,Novorapid) in Type 2 would bring their highs down just as well with a little adjusting without severe lows since it only lasts about 4 hours. ???????
I just live here.

Sorry, I know we both don't know all the in's and out's of Byetta. I'd just
want more studies run on it to make sure it works as predicted and I hope it doesn't cost more than other fast-acting insulins. That's all.
