Hi Barb, you have my sympathies..I'm not a pill person. My doc and diabetic nurse were going to start me on a third and fourth pill. I couldn't do it and so I now just take metformin as a base and inject lantus and it has been wonderful. I only inject once a day and it beats trying to remember the timing of all those pills. Maybe this is a possibility for you. It certainly has been wonderful for me. I think I'd choke to death on pills..I hate them! They also have more side effects and the insulin doesn't. I found the side effects worse than the disease.

I hear ya on the choke to death on pills..I sure do feel that way....I told my Dr. about my wanting to go on lantus he said one more try on a different pill..he feels that my body has the insulin but needs a kick start..so far no changes in my numbers but then this is only my second day...I see him in a month..inless in two weeks these Amaryl dont start working

BArb: I was in the same boat as you..my doc was hesitant to go the insulin route however my diabetic nurse went to bat for me and talked to my doc for me about it being my choice and my need to be in control of my diabetes (i don't do confrontation even on the smallest scale well). She really made a difference for me and now I don't really feel inconvenienced. It's really so simple. If this new meds don't work hopefully you doc won't hesitate with the lantus. I would much rather take one needle then have to have pills all the time. This way I only have to remember one time. The metformin I take at break, and sup, with meal, so it's not hard at all. Hopefully everything will work or not work quickly so you can make a plan. Let me know how it goes.

Barb has your doctor done a C Peptide test on you? or is he just guessing that your "body has the insulin but needs a kick start"? A C Peptide test would take the guessing out of that question I was given a C Peptide test when I was first diagnosed and then a second one 6 months later, there was a big drop in insulin production between the two.

I'm also a type two that didn't do so well on orals, my doctor fiddled around with orals for around 6-8 months with me until I insisted I go on insulin. For me it was an excellent decision and two months ago I went completely off orals and now I'm only on insulin. When I was on orals I literally had to count every bite of food and fruit was totally out of the question (I would jump 10 points eating a small apple). Now I have more freedom when it comes to choosing my food and my control couldn't be better. I also like the fact that if I come down sick with a cold or flu I can treat the high blood sugars immediately.

So if you feel insulin is the route for you to go be firm with your doctor. It's YOUR body and you know what's best for it

I just started the Amaryl 1mg 1x a day
#1how long dose it take to get in your system..the Dr. said he would see me in a month will it take that long to work?

and # 2...when you started on the Amaryl were your AM readings up around 216 in the morning..that is what I have been for a while now

Barb How are you doing on the new meds? My doctor has me on 2x500 metformin twice a day. My numbers are coming down where she wants them except the fasting blood sugar so now I'm adding actos 30 mg at supper. I'm hoping that this will get those numbers where she wants them. I am getting to eat a little more carbs without the number spikes so I feel better about things.
