I have 2 slices of granary bread (toasted) with margerine, and a big mug of coffee. So far my numbers have been great with the toast (rarely over 6), so I'm sticking with it for as long as I can - I'm a bread addict, just feel miserable that I can no longer eat white rolls.

I also have a bowl of Special K cereal mid morning - if I eat nothing I go hypo - and the cereal is enough to tide me over till lunch, numbers wise as well as hunger wise!

Porridge. I swear by it . Sometimes with a banana sliced into it but more often with a few raisins or currents cooked with it. This gives me a slow carbohydrate release.

If I need a quick burst of energy then I use organic cornflakes where sugar is not mentioned on the ingredients or Wheatabix.

Any of these keep me going from 7.30am until lunch at noon.

I can't figure out why I can't go that long without going low. I've tried porridge, but unfortunately I can't stand it

I've tried having something like peanut butter on my toast, to see if that helps me last longer without going low, but all it does is make my bsl higher at the 2 hour mark, so now I just stick with margarine. I've tried simply not eating anything mid morning, but feel so awful about 11 a.m. that I have no choice but to eat.....so now I always have a bowl of cereal or a small banana as a matter of course.

If anyone has any suggestions I'd love to hear them, and like Barb said, it's good to have more choices.

I always have:

- 2 coffees

and will usually have :

- a small bowl of Alpen (fruits and nuts)

or

- a small portion of porridge

or

- 1 peanut butter toast

and

- a fruit (banana, 1/2 a grapefruit, an apple, whatever is available)

When I work from 8 am to 1 pm, I'll have a piece of cheese and an apple around 10h30. I'm usually low by that time (around 4.8) but my work is quite physical and I walk to work.

When I don't work I'll eat less and will skip the mid-morning snack.

I Love Grapefruit but with taking pills for Cholesterol I can't have it any more
I do love peanut butter toast with banana...I buy the sugar and salt free then add some splenda and some salt put it in the blenda then re-jar it...

Lots of great ideas for breakfast

I do occasionally have to eat mid-morning. The other thing is that I have weight to lose so maybe I am able to live on my reserves.

I certainly can't do without breakfast. I can't give a fasting blood sample at my doctor's surgery because they don't start early enough for me to give the sample and then eat before I flake out !

This has helped me even though I didn't ask the question...I've always wondered what people eat for breakfast. I'm a typical penut butter and banana sandwich on carb wise bread (2 slice for 14g carb) of boiled eggs and toaste. I haven't had oatmeal in a while because I really like the instant type with all the flavours. I seem to be only able to find cereals that are quite high in carbs. I tried the Kashi...I could tolerate it but it wasn't really that appetizing. I'm learning that for me I really need protien with every meal other wise my b/s will be higher than they need to be. Like wise I like hearing what works for other people.

Hi Peter

that's so wierd, cos I have lots of weight to lose, but still can't go from breakfast to lunch without going really low. I suffered from hypoglycemia in my 20's and I wonder if that has something to do with it

But......I can do a fasting blood sample - I usually have a 9:00 a.m. appointment, and my doctor is always running late, but I can still do the occasional fasting test without any problems. But as soon as I put food in my stomach, the countdown begins on me going low. I really don't understand it. It's only in the morning that I go low, I never have that problem in the afternoon or evening (though I was going low after lunch when I tried cutting out bread...but I needed the carbs, and so don't go low anymore).

I ussually have jyust a bowl of grain cereal, no sweeteners and just skim milk. This seems to be the best of the cereals for me to hold the sugars. I am usually hungrry by 11 am but then drink a couple bottles of water to last me to lunch.

I like to just eat a carton of carb wise yogurt. You have to look hard to find it but it is there.
