Confused about HA1C

Hi everyone,

I just found this site, and I am hoping I can get some answers; I'm confused.

My HA1C came back at 6.0 with an average of 136 BG. Is this considered diabetic or not? Should this be further investigated?

Thanks for your replies.

The HA1C of a normal/healthy person is generally not more than 5.2. It indicates the blood glucose level/control in the last 3-4 months. A reading of 6 indicates that your BGL is a bit on the higher side. Also, if 136 mm/dl is a fasting BGL, it is above the normal level or 80-100 mm/dl. If these readings accompany with weight loss, frequent urination etc. its surely a case of Diabetes.

I suggest that you should contact your GP ASAP to get a detailed analysis of your blood/urine and let him conclude the rest.

Fighter71,

thank you for replying. The 136 is not fasting, but I have had fasting bg at 107 & 108. Does the 136 mean the avg bg over 2-3 months?

I am concerned one way or the other. Preventative is what I am after, I am not waiting for diabetes to hit me full force and doing something about it after the fact. I have alot of family members with diabetes already.

You should get a full check out by a competent doctor, an endocrinolgist.
There is definately an issue issue here, especially with the family history.
What did your doctor say?
Those are not bad numbers for a fully diabetic person to show as they are working on control. But they are not healthy numbers for a non-diabetic.
The best of luck to you Moriah, I wish I could say "Gee, wonderful, everything is ok, close your eyes and the world will go away.", but I can't do that, and that's not want you want or need.
Again the best to you.

Hi Seacomp

Btw, I should have mentioned I have PCOS and I am on glucophage xr 1500 mg per day. I wonder what my bg would be if I wasn't on the meds.

I went to a second gyn about the pcos and maybe trying byetta. They told me my numbers were pretty good, and I am controlling them well, and they saw no need to prescribe anything else. I asked her about the HA1C reading of 6.0, and she said it is a little elevated (true), but of no big concern. I can't stand it when I go to these doctors and they aren't all that concerned.
What makes it even worse is I don't have insurance and everything is coming out of pocket. I can't afford to keep going from doctor to doctor to have me get more and more test to tell me it is of no concern. Sorry for the rant, doctors can be very frustrating. Most of them don't see the big picture, if you don't have a full blown disease, then most don't see a problem. Btw this rant is not aimed at anyone on this board, I am just letting out many years of frustration with docs that are not in the business of prevenitive medicine.
