first of all... hey, im rachel, im 17 and i personally don't have diabetes, however, my boyfriend may do.. let me explain... brace yourselves... its gonna be long

my boyfriend and i haven't been together long... (8 weeks next wednesday) however, were already very close, i love him veyr much and i feel i know him really well..recently ive noticed a few signs that i know are associated with diabetes (the budding doctor within me shines) either way, i shared these concerns with him and hes booked an appointment to get himself tested with his doctor.

i know that i dont know if he has it yet or not, but i still want to help, i just want to know if theres anything i can do to help him through this, and if not through it, help him to cope with it, im a worrier i know, its what i do, but i just want to try to help him cope. he knows i love him and am behind him 100% whatever happens, but i need to know if theres anything at all ithat i can do? any ideas would be greatly appreciated xx

From a guy's perspective...

If it turns out he does have diabetes, then be aware of it, and then pretty much ignore it without putting him on the spot about it. Don't be too sympathetic, don't treat it like it's a major disaster. Just shrug your shoulders and carry on exactly how you have been before.

This might sound a bit hollow or harsh, but in my experience women have a tendency to care too much about all sorts of things. It's an amazing gift and something that should be treasured. But most guys don't like a fuss being made - they don't actually like sympathy. We do appreciate understanding though, so yeah, read up on diabetes if he does have it, but don't push him too hard. Don't become his second doctor because that's his job and if you push him too hard, he might push himself away, and you don't want that.

The fact that he actually listen to your concerns and did something proactive is a sign that he trusts you a lot - 90% of people who get told by someone else that they might have symptoms of diabetes tend to just ignore it, so kudos to you and to him for being sensible. Keep up whatever it is you've been doing so far because it looks like you're on the right track.

This goes for if your girlfriend/wife has it too. My boyfriend has been incredibly patronizing and a worrier over my diabetes, and has also attributed many of my emotions to it. This can cause a real problem in the relationship. Just chill and don't show worry or too much concern. Be sure to give him the benefit of the doubt...that he is very intelligent and knows how to get informed. Get informed yourself too because even though my boyfriend shows worry and concern, I swear, he still doesn't know a carb from a protein. This is very annoying to me. He'll be, "can you eat this, can you eat that?" This is after two years of me being a diabetic...I feel that he should read up on it himself...I would if he were the one with it...

And, your boyfriend may be fine...I'd relax until you get the true results.

I agree with Deus. Just be there for him, learn WITH him, oh, and carry his insulin and blood glucose meter around in your bag for him when you go out together (i dont make Laura carry mine at all!!! )

Seriously though, if he does have diabetes, it's not the end of the world. it'll open your eyes to all the "****" you shouldn't be eating and you'll both live healthier lives (because you're not going to eat **** infront of him when he can't... are you?)

just a mahoosive thanks to everyone who's helped me out and it turns out he doesnt have diabetes although the doctor says it was clever of me so notice the symptoms lol thanks all so much
