Hey im new too this forum, =]

Hey guys im Rob, 16 year old kid from Australia. i got type 1 diabetes in 2006 which made my teenage years ALOT harder,
Especially because i skateboard almost everyday, which means my Blood sugar level is always going really low, or high, etc.. I am lucky to have a mother who also has type 1 so i have someone to relate too.

but i have No friends with diabetes or know anythign about diabetes, which makes **** hard for me at times.
i came on here because i want to talk to other people out there with type one, people i can relate too.

Hi Rob,

Welcome to the forum, I'm type 2 but there are lots of type 1's here too. Guess what, you just got lots of friends who have diabetes and plenty who know TONS about it.

Keep posting and visiting, it's a great place to learn, share and get support.

Hey Rob, welcome to DF.

I'm Kit (Katie), I've been t1 since I was 8, and live in Melbourne. I'm 24 now. I won't hold being a crow eater against you, as long as you don't barrack for the crows... or Power...

What insulins do you take? I see in your profile that you're often above 20??? not good for the long term... or the short!!

haha yeah my BSl is always high, because as a kid i like choclate and foods with a lot of carbs etc.. i cant help myself but later i think bout how i can get really sick when im older, i gotta get my act together.

i have 16 units of levimir in the morning, and 20 at night. and i have 'novorapid (fast acting) during the day when needed.
another reason my BSL is high is because i dont like having insulin at school, i feel intimidated, but i just go to the toilet and do it and stuff everynow and then.

im stoked i finnally can talk too other type 1 people from aus, haha!

Whoa, I'm guessing you don't count carbs then??

I just had a decent (ok, huge) slice of leftover birthday cake, but I know that I took the right amount of insulin for it... you can eat virtually anything you want without too much worry if you are counting your carbs right...

As for avoiding taking your shots at school... are you using a novopen? Its nice and subtle... I used to carry mine in my pocket or pencil case, and just shoot through my school dress or shirt... People will barely notice, and you will feel a million times better when you have some better control!!!

Rob,

There are lots of people from Aus on the forum, they keep going on about vegimite!

It's good to see that you know what you need to do to take control of your diabetes so as to avoid the nasty things when you are older.

Hi Rob,

Welcome to the forum. I chuckled at your signature. Having type 1 pretty much sucks at any age, but I do particularly remember 16 being not-so-sweet.

I'm thinking it would be good to have a pump. As long as you don't land on it too hard when you crash, it should really make your life easier and your control better. There should be a way to get your tester down to a mini so that the whole kit will fit in your pocket. That way, you can count carbs and know exactly how to correct. At 16, I was injecting in private too. I still do test under the table so as to not affect the weak-stomached in public places. With a pump, your correction doses can be blatant. So much more convenient and your friends will get used to your hi-tech gadget quickly.

I bet your mom knows this already--she's probably a fountain of advice, like all of us moms.

I'm glad you found us.

Mich

Welcome. I was Dxed at 14 too.

There's lots to learn, but thankfully it's not too hard, at least the management side isn't. If you ever have to face the complications side, that gets over our heads in a hurry.

Focus on your basals to start with. That's the foundation of good control. Meal boluses are almost too easy once you understand your basal profile.
