Any "young adult" type 1s out there?

Hey im a 19 (almost 20) year old type 1 diabetic of 11 years and havent looked too far into getting help from others about the way i feel about diabetes. No offense to people of different age groups but ive looked in forums and seen that the teens and adults get throughly represented but not so much for people who are going to, in college, or recently graduated. Its been a ROUGH 11 years and I still get down, depressed, tired, annoyed, fed up, irritated about it. My counselor at school said that i should start by finding people that can relate with me and just talk about it. Its not the actual diabetes that depresses me too much but the feeling of being weak and helpless, a burden to my friends and family, and never feeling like im "normal". Am i wrong/alone in feeling like this?

Sorry I am not a type 1, but a type 2. I am 20 years old and in college. Two of my best friend at school are diabetic, and both on pumps. It's interesting to me that before my dx I didn't even know any diabetics at school and know I know like 5!!

If you need any support with just aspects of age, or if you would like me to ask my friends for some pointers of whatever, feel free to hit me up.

Sorry I am not a type 1 though.

its cool. just talking to someone around the same age helps. i guess im just looking for as many topics in common as possible. I had one diabetic friend in high school but we lost contact. I dont know any other diabetics at all around the same age and i find it difficult to connect to my friends because they have no idea what its like... :/

well im taking a break from college away... i went into ketoacidosis around thanksgiving and scared the **** out of mom. it was a combo of an ear infection, flu, and dehydration that led to the keto. she wanted me to come back and take classes at home for a semester.

Wow... all of that can defiantly get you in trouble. I hate unexpected illness, screws up the BS like crazy.
I am sorry to hear that happened. I actually took the semester off as well, do to emotional/mental issues but I am excited to be flying back to school tomorrow!!
Are you a sophomore or junior by hours?
Have you declared a major? I recently changed from early ed, to social work.

I graduated college 2 years ago, so I suppose I fit into the category. I had a bit of a rough time in grade school, but once high school happened, things seemed to have smoothed over.

Yeah sick days are the worst! When you take a mountain of insulin and you cant get lower than 200?!?!?!? ugh i just wanna give up. And then my parents look at me like its my fault! i hate it. O but trust ive got some emotional and mental issues to sift through as well! :looks down and shakes head: So at least you're not alone! im looking to do the full life makeover though. 2010 is going to be my year. im just looking to start getting whatever help i can get early. Im tired of the same problems ive been having. Low self-esteem/confidence, Fed up with diabetes, Weight ups and downs, and overall happiness. Im a sophomore biology major by hours and i should be but i am about 6 credits behind. Congrats on social work major though!

Curious do you do Insulin via MDI or pump?
Man the emotional sometime is what kills yah... .
Making u not want to go on, which makes controling D even harder, not wanting to exercise, wanting to binge eat (so me), just stinks all together.

I was diagnosed at age 2, and was made fun of relentlessly for being a Diabetic. High school got better since I got into sports and therefore made friends. College everyone was mature about such matters. My control was probably best in high school with the exception of my senior year, but not as good as it is now. Lots of things, good and bad, happened my senior year. College I just didn't care since there were more important things going on, and I do not regret my loose control for a second. Best 4 years of my life.

dang... that sux about the being made fun of. Kids are cruel. I did most of the making fun of myself. it sucks when you are not even on your team. Makes the simplest of things difficult. i remember not asking a girl out in middle school because of how i thought she would dislike me because of my diabetes. High school graduation she comes up to me and tells me how she had a crush on me for years... :p GREAT! but college is AWESOME! too bad im taking a little break but for the 1.5 years i was there it was the best. I have only had this one slip up at thanksgiving since ive been there. but the drs said it wasnt because of diabetes but the high BG's definitely made it worse.

I loved every day I was there, especially the two semesters I studied abroad. It was mighty entertaining figuring out how to work everything while I was living in England, then Italy. My parents nearly flipped out when I told them my plans before my first session, but they accepted it an inevitability and cooled off a bit.

thats cool. my parents are definitely a little more hardcore than that. Moving out into an apartment is a struggle, let alone going out of the country. Im thinkin of telling them about my plans to move out when i go back to my original school. Hopefully they have a similar reaction!
