WELCOME! (lol--bet you didn't want to be welcomed to such a club!) Diabetes is not a death sentence, but it IS a LIFE sentence. I mean that it may not kill you, but you will have to deal with it as long as you do live. And it IS serious. That much said, you CAN deal successfully with diabetes for many many years without its impacting negitively on your life or your health. I've been diabetic for 40 years, so I've got a few years under my belt from which I speak. Diet is extremely important. Weight control is extremely important. Exercise is extremely important. Testing and taking your meds is extremely important. The common denominator of all these aspects of diabetes managemen--diet, weight, exercise, tests and meds--is SELF-CONTROL. Will-power is a muscle that is strengthened by exercise. The more you can exercise self-control, the better you can control diabetes. The thinner you get, the easier diabetes control is--that is an absolute fact. The more you exercise, the easier diabetes control is. The less you eat, the easier diabetes control is. The equation is actually very simple. All you need to do is plug in your own willingness to adjust your life to do the work to control the disease.
AND--that will make you an all-around better person. More powerful, more self-motivated, healthier, stronger, with more endurance and higher self-esteem. You can become a more organized, more self-actualized individual by deciding to be the smartest, healthiest, best-controlled diabetic you can be.
It is a big deal, I would never minimize this disease--it can kill you if you get lazy about it. But if you stay on your toes (all 10 of them, lol!!) and fight and win, you can live the life you want. I've managed college, graduate school, a 30-year career as a Special Ed. teacher, a 33 year marriage, raised 2 children, and in between sneaked off with an Indian guru to an ashram for 2 years to become a meditation instructor--all WITH diabetes. Not to mention hiking glaciers in the Alps, diving coral reefs in the Carribbean, climbing up Mayan pyramids in the Yucatan jungle, trekking down volcanic craters in Hawaii, a side trip to the source of the Jordan River in the occupied Golan Heights in the 1970's, etc... ALL WITH diabetes.
Go for it all--carefully, consciously, wisely.
Michael

Iasked my doctor if i can expect my BS being in a lower range like 100 to 110 i been kind of eatting right small meals fruits and veggies and has not dropped from 150 and the highest i seen has been 180 but is it because my weight ?
| I would ay first get yourself back to feeling better with this illness. Like everyone else said, it'll run higher when you are sick.
If you average 150-180, it wont really hurt you to be there for a little while till you get over the sickness, then you can try to taper it down.
As far as the weight being the issue, I was refering to you having diabetes at all.
Most of the time when an overweight person is diagnosed, it is becasue their pancreas just cant keep up with thier body size.
I would say just continue to eat like you are and take a few walks a day. You will see a difference in the pounds, and possibly (way down the road) eleminate the diabetes all together. (ofcourse this is IF it IS due to your weight only. Its imposible for me to really diagnose that over an internet forum. I would talk to your doctor about that.)
Anyway, welcome again and good job on taking the first step! |

| | | Hey there, about the blurry thing.... I was just recently diagnosed and found that as my blood sugar was coming down for the first time that my eyes had kind of a "delayed focus" or something for like 2 weeks... it seemed to go away and is fine now. I had my eyes checked a couple weeks ago and they were 100% ok, so I assume it was just them adjusting to the normal range of blood sugar....
As for grapefruit, the only thing I'm aware of is that it will interfere with Lipitor if you're Dr has you on that as well.... otherwise just count the carbs....
Hope that helps!!

| | | Blurry vision could be your BS trying to stabilize.
Have you seen an Ophthalmologist yet?
You might want to consider seeing one, once a year if there is nothing wrong with your eyes.
Fruits are good just try to focus a bit on the carbs.. Grapefruits hold about 12 for half of one.

Yes, it is part of the FUN of Diabetes.
When my vision is fuzzy, blurry, then I know that I'm running high
When it's Super-Super Sharp, I know I'm running low.

| | Welcome GoP--I think you will be glad you started the forum. It has been a great help to me. It sounds like you've got a lot of wonderful advise already. Just keep up the fantastic job you are doing. Don't over stress. Just do the best you can do and it will level out here soon. Realize that stress acts like sugar. You'll go high from too much stress.
Good luck, post often with questions and comments.
