does metforming lose its effectiveness?

Been running high the last two three months. Always high in mornings no matter what I eat night before(140-170) My body does not respond anymore to excercise. ie was 156 this morning at wake up. Had a coffee and bowl of cereal. Special K cimmanon pecan and a banana as usual. Went to gym and had good workout. Came home and tested myself about and was at 228!!! Last A1c in Oct was 6.7 Doctor has been very happy with me but last two months everything is high. Go again to Docs mid Jan. I have been taking metformin 2000 a day. 1000 morning and 1000 again at bedtime....Does this usually mean I will have to change meds or go on insulin?? Have been on Metformin almost two years. Bob,

 

Can you tell us what type of things you are eating? If could be that you can help the metformin but watching your carbs. Diabetes can be progressive and so yes it is possible the the metformin you are taking needs help, from another oral med or insulin, however it's also possible that by making some changes to your diet that it would help the metformin. For example instead of having cereal for breakfast go for a lower carb alternative such as bacon and eggs.

 

How long after exercising (and eating) did you test. I find that if I test immediately after exercise my levels have risen.

My typical breakfast is one cup coffee, a banana and bowl of cereal with 2% milk. 10am low carb snack bar. Lunch I have sandwich on wheat. 10 carbs per slice. Apple at 2pm then dinner around 5 which varies . Little snack at night time before bed with my metformin. I tested half hour after workout. Its now three hours after my cereal and had my workout and still at 127...Crazy....Thanks

I've been taking metformin for almost 16 years, it still works. My pancreas makes almost no insulin anymore, so metformin and the other oral drugs I was taking no longer do the job. I've been on metformin and insulin for 3+ years, after 12 years on oral medications.

 

That is how T2 is progressive, your pancreas puts out less insulin as time goes on.

 

On the other hand, my control is way way better than it ever was on oral medications (see below).

Apple Medium 6.4oz 26.1Cho

 

Add all the other foods and you are at or over 100 Grams of Carbs per day.

 

You might want to look into lowering the carbs you ingest. D is a progressive disease and over time you will have to start adjusting to compensate for the decreased function of the pancreas.

Hi Bob, It seems that most of us have a lot of trouble handling carbs especially in the morning. I know that my numbers would be similar to yours if I ate that breakfast. You might try a low, or no carb breakfast for a few days to see what happens. Then it is really up to you. If you do not wish to lower carbs, you will probably need to up your meds.

Cho is a common abbreviation for carbohydrates.

Maybe this comes into that YMMV zone. Cereal hates me, Milk not good for me, whole wheat bread spikes me, in the beginning I could have cereal then I begin to really test 1 and 2 hours after eating and discovered lots of things I did not know. Have you ever tested before and 1 hour and 2 hour after a meal? I would for sure test on that breakfast.

Bob,

 

I would be in agreement with the suggestion to perhaps examine your carb intake. The breakfast (for me) would be far too high in carbs, the cereal on its own is high but add the banana and it would send me soaring!!

ditto....lower your carb intake. too many and wrong kind. diabetes is progressive, but you can control the spedd of that progression in several ways.

I started to wince as I read what you have for breakfast: cereal, banana with 2% milk. If you're gonna do that at least go to whole milk or maybe you could try lactose free whole milk. With those kind of carbs, something had to give.
