So I can eat a 12 o steak right???

Hi Guys,

 

My bg has been sorta controlled with consistently hovering about 140-170 and have been on meds for almost 3 months now. I haven't gone to a Endo since I have no insurance to pay for it and mainly been stalling until I save up for it late next month but I wonder if I can still eat steak without the starchy potatoes and just maybe some rice pilaf on the side???

 

I sure am craving one right now but any suggestions??

Eat the steak. Scratch the potato AND the pilaf. Have a nice crispy green salad on the side. Get yourself a carb counter & eat all the things that don't have more than 5g carb.

I agree with Granny, steak, no rice.

 

there are a I ate a lttle yellow squash today though. it was good and I was 92 at the 2 hour mark.

Go for the steak but scratch the starches. We found a good substitute for the potatoes is spaghetti squash if you want to give that a try!

Steak!!!

Yummy. Pure protein.

Go for it.

Forget the rice, bad juju.

Have a small sweet potato.

Steak is a staple of my diet, I have probably 3-4 a week now. It's expensive, for sure, but I've gotten spoiled.

 

I typically sub in broccoli or mixed veggies instead of the potato, and start with a small salad.

 

Def. my favorite meal.

Not to be a downer or anything, but 12oz of steak is a lot. Although if it is an occassional thing maybe not too bad. Too much protein is bad for your kidneys.

If he is trying to bring his BG's down, though, it might be better to splurge on protein till he can.

Enjoy the steak & salad and/or veggies, test your sugars at 1 and 2 hrs. Sometimes excessive protein turns (that isn't the right word, but it escapes me now) to glucose. If it hasn't come down after 2 hrs. check at 3hrs.

How about cooking some cauliflower until it is soft, mash it with butter with your steak - kind of like fake mashed potatoes.

What I've read is that if you have normal kidney function then protein and how much of it is not an issue.

I have the same understanding Mia... there may be some association (worthy of further investigation - not proof) between dietary protein intake worsening kidney function when there is pre-existing kidney damage, but there does not seem to be a link between dietary protein and causing kidney damage. I am convinced by the weight of evolution that we are well adapted to safely eat steak... especially from healthy grass-reared cattle.

 

Once the body has met its needs for protein, some surplus protein (in the form of its building blocks - Amino Acids) can be converted to Glucose by the Liver in a process called Gluconeogenesis.

My doctor is trying to watch my protein, not that I had any problems with it, but she said just when people like us start eating meat more, it can become a problem, but I think that's if you eat alot of red meat, if your mixing it up with chicken and turkey, I don't see any problem with eating steak. Just don't try to make red meat your main meat. If you eaten some rice before and did not have any problems, it may be okay, moderation is the key. I think it's one cup cooked.

Wow...1 cup of rice? My BG would be skyrocketing! I think the suggestions for cauliflower or other non-starchy carbs might work better, but of course, YMMV!

If your eGFR, creatinine or BUN are high, I'd be careful with too much protein.

 

If they are fine, go for it. Steaks, chops, roasts, filets, loins... any meats of any animal - fair game and very BG friendly. Delicious too. Don't worry about the fat in them, either.

 

As for sides, most veggies are great. Potatoes, rices, stuffings, pastas - nope.

 

Saute some mushrooms and onions for a side, or steam some broccoli. Meals like that are exactly what I used to gain control.

 

And my lipid profile became so much better too.

Do yourself a favour and check out the USDA Nutritional Database...

 

Try a search on "porterhouse steak" -> Beef, short loin, porterhouse steak, separable lean and fat, trimmed to 1/8" fat, choice, cooked, broiled -> 100 grams

 

Check out just how many nutrients are present in significant numbers.... vitamins, minerals etc... just about everything with the possible exception of Vitamin C. Also realise that a large portion of the fat is "oleic acid" -- same as in olive oil... a so-called "healthy fat".

 

When we eat (naturally raised) meat -- or otherwise higher up the food chain -- we get the benefit of what our "food" has eaten ;)

I eat more steak now too, yum! 1 cup of rice would push me through the roof! I say stick to veggies and leave off the rice and/or potato unless you eat a very very small potato.

The only steak I ever order is the 6 or 8 ounces filet. I'm not a big fan of salads. I slowly have been trying to eat them. I like the Ceaser which is worse and like more dressing lol.

I think a decent Caesar dressing on crisp Romaine can be very tasty and carb friendly at the same time :eating: ...just go easy on (or skip) the croutons

 

Don't forget you can still have the sour-cream, cheese and bacon-bits from the "all dressed" potato... just not the potato... OK maybe half the baked skin, filled with sour-cream, cheese etc...

I'm lucky in that I've found I don't have much trouble with mashed potatoes.. still haven't tried a baked potato.

 

My BUN and Creatine levels were fine, so I'm happy. :P

 

Also, I didn't like salads at first either, it's all about finding a good dressing (for me). I try a different one each time I buy a bottle, but have recently found the Brianna's brand. (@amccrazgrl - Ukrop's sells them with the reg. dressings) They're awesome.

That is just not true. There has been a concerted campaign for decades now to stop people from eating meta. There are more lies out there about food then even about "man-made" global warming. And both kinds will kill you.

I'm with Granny. Eat the meat:

If you do not have liver problems, the liver will slowly convert protein to Glycogen (in the liver). This liver is the body's first line of defense against hypo. This is what sometimes happenes when you are exercising - say 92 before and you find it 101 after excercising. The glycogen becomes glucose. Providing you liver functions normally, protein should be ok. But as with anything else, moderation is good. Because of this, so is fish, pork and chicken (all protein also), but not red meat all the time.

 

Eat the meat, forget the potato and rice. 140-170 is still high and the above posts are correct, limit carbs certianly rice and potatoes. Eat beans or brocolli (some). Bring those numbers down and then see you can add but testing. I love Chipolte's. But 1 cup of rice will take me to 220 for several hours. I quit eating that. Hang in there. Keep working to bring your BG numbers to normal. Best Wishes, Larry

STEAK STEAK and NO RICE or Potatoes wrap some bacon around that steak and have some prawns and tomatoes stirfried in olive oil and garlic surf and turf!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
