When Should I Take A Chromium Supplement For My Type 2 Diabetes??

my doctor is satisfied with my blood test numbers

 

A1C 6.4

Albumin 3.0

cholesterol 147 [from 247]

triglycerides 160 [from 207]

no sugar or liver byproducts in my urine.

 

but i would like to get my blood sugar numbers even lower. i take metformin once a day after dinner. 500mg extended release. i would also like to take a chromium supplement, to help lower my blood sugar. i understand that chromium will help further sensitize my insulin receptors, thus lowering my blood sugar.

 

i don't know when to take it?

 

would it be safe to take it with my metformin pill at night? OR should it be the first pill i take when i wake up in the morning? Or After my lunch?

 

Any Suggestions? Advice?

Chromium Polynicotinate versus Picolinate

Chromium Polynicotinate has greater biological activity than other forms of Chromium, including sources from picolinate. CP helps to stabilize blood sugar levels and can be critical to the synthesis of cholesterol, fats and proteins. Chromium polynicotinate consists of pure niacin-bound chromium, identified by United States Government researchers as the active component of true GTF (Glucose Tolerance Factor). GTF is responsible for binding insulin to cell membrane receptor sites. Chromium Polynicotinate is a mineral required for regulation of blood sugar. It is involved in the metabolism of glucose and is essential for energy. The ability to maintain stable blood sugar levels is threatened by the lack of chromium in our soil and water and by a diet often high in white flour, refined sugar and junk food. Aside from genetic damage, picolinate is known to "break off" from its chromium-bond and cause adverse effects. Chromium picolinate is a patented version of the trace mineral chromium. Picolinic acid is produced in the human body, apparently for the purpose of improving the cellular uptake of trace metal ions. Scientists have demonstrated that several minerals in picolinate form are better assimilated than most other forms of the same minerals.

Chromium polynicotinate is a well assimilated form which may have more benefits for certain conditions than does the picolinate form. Chromium polynicotinate seems to have some definite advantages over chromium picolinate, including even better bioavailability. It now appears that niacin-bound chromium is a safer form of chromium for supplementation. Some studies have also shown that niacin is necessary for chromium supplements to be of benefit.

I take chromium, normally with breakfast. I don't think the timing is all that important with chromium.

 

Just curious.....did your cholesterol drop 100 points just from diet? Or are you taking cholesterol medication?

I noticed that it seemed I was vomiting more on high doses of chromium- a nurse told me that the ch. picolinate is safer for the heart. I also take fish oil, I heard it can lower cholesterol

I have taken 600mcg/day to lower my blood sugar quickly before

Before dosing what may be a destructively large amount of anything, it might be good to know, by way of blood test, that you need it and what additional dose will keep you safe.

That is really interesting - I have a friend (non diabetic) just released from the hospital with heart palp. for a second time that woke her from a deep sleep and this time they claimed the chromuim was the culpret. I too had been looking into beginning to take it. It could always be that she was taking another medication that interacted...but now I'm completely puzzled. Interesting indeed. Can you tell a marked difference in your numbers when taking it vs. not taking?

I started taking 1000mg/metforming and 600mcg chromium for about 2 weeks and my I lowered my fasting blood glucose over 20 points on a CVS meter. I also did at least 20 min/cardio running/day and cut out most of the sugars and soda in my diet. about a month later though I ended up with elevated AST/ALT liver levels
