What do you eat when you have an upset stomach/the runs?

This morning I had an upset stomach and diarrhea. I was afraid to eat because I didn't want to make things worse, but I was hungry. I had some goldfish crackers and did not take my metformin and no surprise, my bg was 220.:( Before the D, I always had crackers or toast or followed the BRAT diet when having tummy troubles, but all of those foods will make my bg high. I was going to have eggs and cheese for breakfast, but eggs often make my stomach sore on a good day!

 

So I'm wondering what you folks eat that is bg friendly when you have gastro issues?

I regularly have tummy issues (due to other illnesses) and I had to find an alternative to my usually stomach soothers. I have had success with sugar free jello, greek yogurt mixed with cream and sweetener and broccoli cheddar soup (again with tons of cream). I keep my portions small so that I don't "set things off" again. :D

 

I also like to use a bit of sparkling water or diet soda instead of plain water. I don't know why but plain water can make the tummy gurgling and whatnot even worse.

I never would've thought about eating my greek yogurt. I've always thought dairy would make things worse. I'm feeling better now, but in the future I won't be afraid to have some dairy!

 

I don't know why I didn't think of soup myself. It seems so obvious now! And tea! I love all kinds of tea! Peanut butter sounds good, I wouldn't of thought of it, but it doesn't sound odd at all. SF jello and diet soda sound good and I always have those in the house.

 

I think I'm out of the woods. I had dinner (grilled chicken salad with ranch dressing) and no problems so far. It's good to know what to eat if it happens again. I had never thought about eating with gastro issues until now. I really want some broccoli and cheddar soup now! Thanks for your responses.

Interesting about yogurt. I'll remember to try yogurt next time. Always good to have choices during those critical times. :toilet:

I probably wouldn't have any goldfish crackers, that may have increased your issue. It is good if you follow the BRAT diet because that will certainly settle your stomach down. I have had terrible issues in the past with my stomach and I have a few suggestions. Stay away from cheese and eggs for a bit - cheese especially can make things worse. Chicken soup with rice works really well with stomach problems. Another thing is sourdough bread. I know it might be bad for diabetes, but it does work. I wouldn't eat alot of fruit because that might increase the diarrhea and stay away from coffee for a bit because that is a durietic (sp?) and it could intensify the situation.

I had some kind of intestional bug this past Monday. I had some soup and crackers around lunch time but nothing after that, other than hot tea.

I too have found that yogurt is awesome for an upset stomach. The greek yogurt has a very smooth texture that's good for when you nauseated. I get the plain and sweeten it with a little fresh fruit and some Stevia. It's delicious!

Take care of your BG numbers when you're not sick. When you are sick I think you have to take care of the sick and put your tight BG regimen on hold. The quicker you get better...the quicker you're back to regular numbers.

 

When I'm throwing up...I pretty much don't eat anything. Less fuel to the fire...so to speak. If it turns into dry heaves...I drink water so I'm actually throwing up. Doing the dry heave shuffle sucks. I can usually feel when I've turned the corner. At that time I'll test the waters with warm soup. Straight liquid...no bits and pieces for my stomach to decide what to do with.

 

For diarrhea I just drink a lot of water and let it run its course. If it gets worse...my next move would be the ER. You can die from diarrhea. The last place I want my daughter to find me dead is on the commode.

I find that fiber powder helps, also pepto bismol (I buy the generic kind)

for some reason the fiber works better for me than prescription nexium or zantac

definitely go see a GI doctor if gets bad

The doctor told me with diarrhea keep drinking. If not you will end up in the hospital hook up to an IV pole. That's

from experance.
