Eating Low Carb at a Chinese Restaurant

I haven't eaten Chinese food since I started low carbing, and I'm nervous. Tonight we're going out to my favorite Chinese restaurant and I don't know if I can stick to my diet. I love the Kung Pao Chicken with chicken fried rice and lots of hot sauce. What do you low-carbers eat at Chinese restaurants? Obviously the rice is a no-go and there've got to be a bunch of veggies involved. I'm guessing that many of the sauces have a lot of sugar or carbs that affect bgs. Any suggestions on alternatives to my favorite dish? What are your go-to Chinese restaurant meals? I might just go ahead, eat the meal and monitor like a hawk.

There is absolutely NO way to eat low carb in a Chinese restaurant! All you can do is set an extended bolus is you are a pumper. On MDI, give yourself 2/3 of a large bolus and shoot the rest of it in smaller increments over about 3 or 4 hours. Good luck!

Enjoy your meal! Beef and broccoli has been the safest for me blood sugar wise. And unless you are bold and adventurous, ask them to leave off the MSG! (Not sure it's really left out, even if requested.) I ate at PF Changs a few years ago, and lost my voice and most of my breath a few hours later. After a long sleep, I was ok.

Absolutely not true that one cannot eat low carb at a Chinese restaurant. One of the best meals for my bg is the green bean chicken special at my favorite Chinese restaurant. Obviously they don't load the sauce up with sugar and corn starch. I neve get rice or won tons or anything like that. I stick with this one dish, Order a la carte. I've had it at least ten times and it never fails.

Thanks for the tips! I'll check out the menu and we'll see .... I'm leaning toward the high-carb meal though, and just dealing with the consequences. Maybe I'll be adventurous and try something new. Jan, that's scary about the MSG reaction you had!

Try to order the meats without any sauce to avoid tons of sugar. I would think shrimp or chicken might be your best bet. Hot and Sour soup might be an option, although there is cornstarch in it. I so OK with egg rolls dipped in the hot mustard not the duck sauce.

Kung Pao Chicken has lots of veggies, and peanuts. Ask them to go light on the sauce. Also, Egg Foo Young . It's basically an omlette with bean sprouts and meat inside. Ask for the sauce/gravy on the side, and add OT sparingly.

Ooh, I LOVE egg foo young! I decided to go with my old favorite and see if I could control my bg. I wasn't that successful. The food was delicious but I paid with it with a bg in the high 200's afterward. I woke up at 3am, tested and it was 120 so not too terrible. Oh well.

Kathryn - I could have, and almost did type: I LOVE Egg Foo Young! I just hardly ever find it on a menu anymore. Glad you enjoyed your meal!

Around here if its a chinese buffett alot of times they have crab legs which are low carb and devilled eggs, stuff like that.

Not a big fan of Chinese restaurants, however, a local one does offer spicy wok fired chicken in a lettuce wrap, which is pretty yummy.

I eat the Black Pepper Chicken, its basically chicken, zucchini, mushrooms, onions in a stir fry sauce. It doesnt do anything to me.

I think it's all about the sauce (?). Chinese food is so unpredictable; depends a lot on the restaurant too. I tend to avoid it completely since my bad experience with the MSG. I may have to get me some beef & broccoli again to see if I was all wrong!

I haven't tried any of the asian resturants since I was dx. If I want anything like that I usually just make my own, which truthfully I like better anyway.
