well. i had my 12 week scan. unfortunately all is not good. the nuchal fold was abnormally large (5mm) which alone is a fairly good indicator of a chromosomal problem such as down's syndrome or one of the rarer nasties. its also possible that it is a more minor heart defect or something else, and a slim chance that it is nothing whatsoever. we await the results of my blood tests to give a more precise risk factor and are seeing a neonatal consultant on monday. all quite upsetting and cant believe its happening to us.

thankyou everyone,

i'm so touched by people's kindness. both here and everywhere else this horrible time has reminded me that people are truly kind and caring and whatever the outcome i hope if i can learn one thing it will be that people are good and mean well.

well...tomorrow or monday i will get the results of a blood test that combined with the nuchal measurement and my age will give me specific risk factors for a number of chromosomal problems including downs and some others. based on the measurement alone it is almost certain that all will be in the high risk factor and i will have to have an invasive procedure to get a sample of foetal tissue and look at its DNA. im seeing a great lady on monday who will do another scan and possibly the invasive procedure.

however. a slight twist. my friends sister is a sonographer and has looked at my scan photos. she thinks that a mistake has been made and that measurement taken was the distance between the amnion and the baby, rather than the nuchal fold. i dont want to get my hopes up but i really hope that this dreadful mistake is what has happened....

i will keep you posted as to what happens. you just dont think these things will happen to you do you? and also, i always kind of think i have enough bad luck having diabetes and a touch of microalbumin in my urine....know what i mean...sort of one piece of bad luck will immunise you against others?!

Loads of love and thanks to all of you wonderful people

Liz xxxxxxxxxx

My hopes & best wishes are with you also Liz.

Having that sonographers opinion will help you through these days waiting for the tests.

I don't know if this helps but when my sister was pregnant she was told that there was evidence of an anomaly that could suggest downs syndrome early on in her pregnancy (they could not verify with any great certainty). She was of course worried sick throughout her term but delivered a perfectly healthy bouncing baby boy. I've heard this sort of thing more than once before ... there is evidence that medical diagnostic testing may not be completely accurate.

Just one more person who wishes you the best of luck.

When we were pregnants, me and my friend who is diabetic too,we made the blood testing named triple test at 12 weeks and it was bad for both. We made the amniocentesis test and the both child was OK!

That was medical terms in my country....I hope you understood.

It is a terrible stress, I know because I passed through it.

Good luck!

i keep re-reading all your messages of support it really does help; going back to see the foetal medicine specialist tomorrow....not sure at this point what is going to happen - definitely another scan with a better machine (different hospital), possibly the CVS, depends on whether bloodwork comes back......i hope and pray that i am one of the lucky ones where all the signs are there but everything is ok
