New Diagnosis.......How long for Metformin to show results on BG?

Recommended Posts

JourneyGirl76

Hi - just received my official diagnosis yesterday, along with an Rx for 500mg 1x/day for metFormin... curious to know how long it should take for lower BG to show up on my monitor? I haven't been able to see the diabetes specialist or the nutritionist yet (their schedules, not mine) so I'm also looking for some sort of guidelines on how many carbs grams and how many sugar grams I should be eating at each meal and totals for each day?

Any help/guidance would be greatly appreciated - feeling quite a bit overwhelmed.....

Metformin can take 3-4 weeks to build up in your system. On its own metformin doesn't lower bgs at meals. But it works in the liver preventing some of the glycogen conversion that causes liver dumps when you are not eating. It is. Ot sugsr grams you need to watch out for but all carbs. So wheat bread or oatmeal will spike you as much as sugar. Also 500 mg is a small starter dose of metformin. I had to raise mine to 2550 mg before I saw normal bgs.
