Protein in urine before trying to conceive

Recommended Posts

Has anyone been pregnant and started with some protein in their urine? I recently did a 24hr urine test that came back with some protein, around 1.3. I am currently on medication to keep it

controlled but I know I would have to go off of it if I got pregnant. I am going to stop the drugs and get retested in a few months and see what the numbers are but my doctor said protein goes up in pregnancy even in non-diabetics so based on the numbers I would have to weigh the risks. Has anyone been through this before? Thanks!

Hi Meryl, something wrong with your profile, I notice that a lot lately. It has you down as a male. :) I don't recall my urine test but received my blood test for protein and it comes back a 6.7 and normal range is 6.4 - 8.4. I cant find your intro so if you could tell us more? Are you stateside?

Thanks! I updated my profile :) I have been spilling some protein for a few years, been taking diovan to control it. But I know you have to go off the medication when you're pregnant and kidney problems can get worse. Just wanted to know if anyone had started with a higher protein, I think it's the creatinine level and still had an ok pregnancy :)

I am 6 weeks pregnant and had a 24 hour urine test done for protein. I have a pretty high level of protein in my urine and my ob has referred me to a kidney specialist. My blood pressure is very good.I am taking medication for it. I will see the specialist in one week. I am worried about the affect of this on my baby; although the doc said my result was a common number and I would just have to be watched closely.I am very nervous and I know it will be a long 6 days for me until my appt.

I am in the exact same boat. Im 5 weeks pregnant too and had to stop taking the Lisinopril which I used to protect my kidneys. I couldn't find anything online about replacing it with another medication when used to protect kidneys. (Plenty of replacements of I was taking it for my blood pressure) I posted here last week with similar questions and no one could help. At least we aren't alone! I see my doctor in 1.5 weeks. I'll let you know what I hear if you let me know what you hear if you find out sooner! But, the fact that my doctor didn't give me anything to replace it with yet makes me think that (1) maybe there are no alternative options for us but (2) we will be OK for 9 mo or they would have told us not to get pregnant.

Good luck and you're not alone!

So I did go to my doctors and ask about the alternative medications during pregnancy. Apparently, there are none. I was lucky though. Somehow, without my lisinopril in my system for a month, I'm no longer spilling proteins. So, I won't have to worry. However, my doctor was sure that I'd be ok for 9 months before we got the results. It does increase some risks to you and your baby, but the risks are greater if you're taking the medications that they told you not to! (For me, I was on Lisinopril)
