Protein = empty calories?

Is protein that is not "whole protein" basically the equivalent of empty calories?

Also, assuming one consumes enough whole protein to meet their needs, is there any benefit to eating more?

Or... is it just a waste of calories when you realy should be eating (more fat)?

Wow, I hadn't realized the protein complementary idea was still around.  I thought it had been disproved (or at least downplayed in importance) years ago.  I remember when doing Pritikin in the 80s (*shudder*) working so hard to make sure I was eating the right balance of vegetable proteins so I'd get "complete protein."

Now I'm curious; this is the first time I've heard of it in ages.  Is the idea gathering steam again?
