The News, These states want to import cheaper drugs from Canada

Norm Thurston is a "free-market guy" — a conservative health economist in Republican-run Utah who rarely sees the government's involvement in anything as beneficial.

But in a twist, the Utah state representative is now pushing the state to flex its muscle to spur federal action on ever-climbing prescription drug prices.

"This is something that a red state like Utah could do," Thurston said. "Those outrageous cost increases are not the result of the free market."

This gave me a chuckle. The reason Canada has cheaper drugs is because of government involvement. Our government told the drug companies that they couldn't charge whatever the market will bear. That they must keep profits to a reasonable amount. They can charge more until they have recouped the costs of developing the drug and then is open to other companies to make generic versions of the drug. The price of the drug goes down then because no one will pay an exorbitant price for something they can get much cheaper.

One of the main differences between our 2 countries is that in Canada the rights of all supersede the rights of the individual. It's the opposite in the USA and that is why no one has tried to curb drug prices. Nowhere was this more apparent than the transaction of a few years ago. A young guy bought the patent of a drug that sold for pennies and jacked the price up to $700.
