My insurance now requiring purchase of individual pens

Recommended Posts

I don't know if this is old hat for some of you, but my insurer (Blue Cross) just started requiring purchase of individual pens rather than 5-pen boxes. My pharmacist said that insurers are no longer accepting "we can't break up boxes" from pharmacists. According to my pharmacist you can't get a 90-day supply anymore either, insurers are demanding 30 days or less from now on, as if this were a temporary condition.

Use a Lantus pen every 20 days? Then you have to ask for a new refill and go to your pharmacist every 20 days. Not only tedious and annoying, but they have a large financial incentive since they're now applying my co-pay per-pen rather than per-box. That's a massive increase in my out of pocket costs.
