AMA stomps on paleo book

It seems  the Australian Medical Association  is still threatened by positive reviews on the paleo or low carb  diet.

Theyve urged netflix to remove the documentary but  I'm thrilled netflix has not obliged.

Meanwhile, I am in the Succeed study at UofM for treating diabetes with low carb diet (20 net carbs daily). http://www.succeedstudy.org/ I saw some of the push back on low carb and asked my study Dr about it. let me share her response:

What we know from many clinical trials with people with type 2 diabetes is that carbohydrate restriction can improve insulin resistance, improve glucose control, lower inflammation, improve GERD, and lower liver fat, all healthy changes.  For example, last month I attended this conference about very low-carb diets: https://u.osu.edu/ketodiet/  The audience was more than half physicians, and the talks were serious discussions of all of the biological changes that occur with ketosis (which happens when we eat a very low-carb diet), including positive effects for inflammation, insulin resistance, cancer, recovery from exercise, epilepsy, and preliminarily Alzheimer's.  If you'd like to see some of what was discussed, it's on twitter!  https://twitter.com/hashtag/lowcarbOSU?src=hash  They'll also eventually post all the talks.

 

And, I'm on the American Diabetes Association's Nutrition Review Committee this year.  I reviewed all of the research evidence for what people with type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and prediabetes should eat.  (It took a long time!)  Based on our read of the evidence, there was no more effective eating pattern for type 2 diabetes than a very low-carb diet.

Howdy guys! Thanks, it's nice to drop in and say hello. have been busy house buying/moving my mom/work and life in general! Since I started the LCHF diet about 6 weeks ago (7 counting my first week was easing into it) I am down about 10 lbs.  so many negative articles have come out - i was really worried to continue on, but the email I shared helped me be brave about it.

Honestly, we stick between 20-35 net carbs a day. Other than that, and the links above...that's really most of it  We are sent a scale that "phones home" when we weigh, and also a few nice surprises, like a keto cookbook, ketone test strips, some cooking supplies and encouragement. Also they are good about answering questions.

Over the last year, I had added carbs  - maybe eating 150 a day, total. I noticed my meals had postprandial well over 200, and fastings were rising into the 170's (I have always fought morning highs). My instant A1c was 6.5 at the doctor's office, but a few weeks later when qualifying for this study - was a 7.  I was very lax the week before the A1c blood test for the study.

I am feeling so much BETTER than I have in ages. I am down almost 10 lbs and notice my face is less puffy. I look healthier. The study is a year long, and I am committed to making it to the end of the year. If this goes as well as I think it may, I will adopt it long term. My daughter is also on it and doing very well.
