Metformin to help treat breast cancer...

Recommended Posts

I just read an article in a magazine, and it said that they have been experimenting with metformin in the lab, by treating certain types of breast cancer cells with it.  By using metformin, it lowered the blood sugar, which the cancer cells feed on.  Since there was less sugar to feed on, the cancer cells had to work harder to break down the sugar.  This extra effort made the cancer cells weaker, which made them more vulnerable to treatment with anticancer drugs.  They found that metformin, combined with a cancer treatment, slowed the cancer cells growth rate by 76%.  They said that this new approach is particularly promising for treating something called triple-negative breast cancer, which is an aggressive form of the disease that doesn't respond well to existing treatments.
